Let’s be honest—car insurance can feel like one of those things everyone should understand… but no one really explains. Whether you’re a new driver, buying your first car, or just trying to make sense of your renewal notice, you’re not alone in having questions.
We’ve rounded up some of the most common car insurance questions people ask—answered in plain, simple language. No fancy jargon, just straight talk.
Do I Have to Have Car Insurance in Trinidad & Tobago?
Yes! The law says that you must at least have Third Party insurance. Without car insurance, you’re breaking the law and you could be in serious financial and legal trouble if you have an accident.
What Is Third Party Insurance?
This covers damage or injury to the other driver and their property if you or anyone you authorize to drive your vehicle is responsible for an accident. It does not cover damage to your car. However, it is possible to amend your third-party coverage, to protect your car if it is stolen or damaged by fire.
What Is Comprehensive Insurance?
This is the all-rounder. In the event of an accident, it covers injury and damage to you, your vehicle, and the other driver, as well as their property. It often includes other benefits, such as:
- Wrecking Service
- Waiver of Excess – this means your contribution to the settlement is covered by your insurance company upfront
- Loss of Use – this gives you a financial allowance to rent a vehicle for ten days if yours is unusable
- Windscreen Coverage
- Personal Accident Benefit – this is compensation for passengers in cases of severe injuries, with no impact on your full claim amount
- Protection against various risks like hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and incidents involving riot or strike
What’s a premium?
Your premium refers to the money you pay your insurance company to keep your car insured.
What affects the cost of my premium?
There are a few things that can make your premium go up or down:
- Coverage type – Comprehensive costs more than Third Party Insurance, but you also get a lot more from Comprehensive
- Driving history– Clean record = better rates with a No Claim Discount
- Gender – Women are statistically proven to be safer drivers; so ladies, you can look out for insurance companies that reward your road safety
- Your vehicle’s age – If your vehicle is under three years of age, you may be eligible for a new car discount.
- Your age – Younger drivers usually pay more. However, if you were named on your parents’ insurance, and they have a No Claim discount, that could translate into cheaper insurance for you. Also, look out for discounts specially for young drivers, such as our good grades discount.
Do I Have to Pay My Premium All at Once?
No! You can pay your car insurance through premium financing, which requires a downpayment followed by nine monthly instalments.
How Do I Get the Best Deal on Car Insurance?
Shop around – don’t just stick with the insurance company your parents used. Look for insurers that offer discounts relevant to you and – if you need it – flexible payment terms. Talk to friends and family about their experience with insurers. Were they ever in an accident? How would they rate their insurers’ performance? And remember, always choose an insurer who will take the time to answer all your questions before you sign anything.
