Carnival Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe During Carnival Season in Trinidad & Tobago

Carnival is finally here — the music is pumping, the fêtes are in full swing, and the road is calling. But one thing should always come first: your safety.

We’re not here to kill the vibe. We just want to help you enjoy Carnival responsibly so you can make memories for all the right reasons.

💡 Summary at a Glance

You can enjoy Carnival while protecting yourself, your loved ones, and your property.

  • Take only what you need; leave extra cash, bank cards and expensive jewellery behind

  • Go out in a group; if someone goes missing, look for them

  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut if something feels off

  • Watch your drink; if you suspect your drink has been spiked, alert a trusted friend immediately

  • Drink in moderation and hydrate often

  • Plan how you’re getting home — designated driver, ridesharing or trusted taxi

  • Avoid hostile situations; if you notice an altercation brewing, step away

1. Take Only What You Need

Carrying too many valuables can make you an easy target for theft. Leave expensive jewellery at home and pack light.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you really need all your bank cards?
  • How much cash is enough?
  • Can you leave unnecessary items behind?

Many experienced masqueraders swear by a fête phone — a basic phone you won’t stress about losing or damaging. As an added bonus, the less you’re worrying about your belongings, the more you can enjoy the experience.

2. There’s Safety in Numbers

Carnival is more fun with friends — and safer too.

If you need to leave the group, whether it’s for the bar or the bathroom, go with at least one other person. Keep an eye out for your crew, and if someone has gone missing, search for them. Looking out for each other is one of the simplest ways to stay safe.

3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

You don’t have to be paranoid, but you should be observant.

Research on criminal behaviour shows that people who are alert and aware of their environment are less likely to be targeted. Make casual eye contact, notice who’s around you, and trust your instincts if something feels off.

4. Watch Your Drink at All Times

That friendly stranger offering to buy you a drink may seem nice, but it’s best to be cautious. To reduce the risk of drink spiking:

  • Avoid accepting drinks from people you don’t know well
  • Watch the bartender prepare your beverage
  • Never leave your drink unattended
  • Drink from bottles when possible; if you can bring your own bottles, bring one with a screw top lid
  • If using a cup, keep a hand over the top

If your drink has been spiked, you may not be able to tell by the smell or taste. Symptoms may include feeling much drunker than expected, nausea and vomiting, confusion, slurred speech, loss of balance, or blurred vision.

If you suspect your drink has been tampered with, alert a trusted person immediately. Go with that person to a safe place. If your condition worsens, seek medical assistance.

5. Drink Alcohol in Moderation

Alcohol lowers inhibitions and impairs judgement — which can make you more vulnerable to accidents, assault or robbery. Pace yourself, hydrate often, and know your limits.

Remember, you can always have more drinks later, but you can never have less.

6. Plan How You’re Getting Home

Before you leave, know exactly how you’re getting back safely.

  • Designate a sober driver
  • Use a trusted local ridesharing service or taxi
  • Avoid driving if you’ve been drinking

You can also create a WhatsApp group and ask everyone to check in once they’ve arrived home.

7. Avoid Hostile Situations

Carnival crowds can get intense. If someone bumps into you or tensions start rising, walk away.

Confrontations — especially where alcohol is involved — can escalate quickly. Your safety is more important than proving a point. If you notice an altercation brewing, create distance immediately.

💭 Final Thoughts: Celebrate Carnival, But NEVER Sacrifice Safety

Carnival is in our DNA. It’s joy, freedom, culture, and community. But no party is worth risking your life or well-being. By staying alert, planning ahead, and looking out for each other, we can all enjoy a safer Carnival season.
